The volunteers are essential to the school. They provide additional assistance in the schoolroom and enrich the children's experience. Reading to and with the children and also listening to the children read are some of the many activities volunteers provide. Other activities include handwork and craft. The children benefit from visits by young people from neighbouring high schools who come to read to and interact with the hospital children. This year is The Year of the Volunteer and we say a big thank you to all those who give of their time and skills to make the stay of the sick child in hospital, more bearable.
Rachel is a volunteer teacher who gives of her time twice a week. She helps the children with their school work, their computer work and she teaches them new songs as well.
Another supporter of our hospital school is Niki Daly, the children's author and illustrator. He has given us many beautiful books for our library. He has also given us a special teddy bear that he used in one of his stories. Rachel enjoys reading Niki's books to the children.
Visit from Grade 8 Pinelands High School
In August 2002, Ms Dichmont, a teacher from Pinelands High School and a group of Grade 8 learners visited the hospital school to hand over story books which they had written to the children. The young people from Pinelands High were taken to the different wards to meet the children and hand over the books. The hospital children were delighted with their books.
Pinelands High School 2001
Computer Studies students from Pinelands High School have made activity books for the children in hospital. These activity books deal with a wide range of topics dealing with safety, such as fire safety, electricity safety, road safety, etc. The children in hospital were delighted as there was a book for each child which suited his/her level and language requirement. Thank you PHS Computer Studies students for the wonderful books!
