The children in the Therapeutic Learning Centre which is an important part of the hospital school, have started their own vegetable garden this year. Mr Robert Stodel, owner of Stodels Nursery and Garden Centre, has very kindly sponsored the garden. Charles, from Stodels Nursery, visits regularly and helps the children to plant, weed and build their compost heap.
In May 2001, the children invited Mr and Mrs Stodel to a vegetable lunch. They picked the vegetables and with the help of their teacher, Sylvia, made a delicious pot of vegetable soup. This garden has proved to be of great therapeutic value as well as an important teaching aid as the children are learning about nature, the environment and life skills. Towards the end of November 2001, the learners from the Therapeutic Learning Centre reaped the benefits of their hard work. They held their market day and sold the onions and chillies. Most of the money was used to buy fertilizer and compost and new seeds for the next season of planting. The rest of the money was used to pay for an outing to the nearby Newlands swimming pool for the children.
