The past few years have brought us in contact with different international friends. Han Damwichers from the Netherlands regularly sends us the most beautiful stickers for the children. Each month there is great excitement in the classroom when the parcel of stickers arrive and the children may open it. The children may choose from the stickers which ones they want when they have completed their work satisfactorily. On some special occasion when a child feels a doctor or a nurse deserves a sticker, he or she may choose from our supply to give to them. Thank you, Han, for bringing smiles to the faces of our children. We have also made some contact with people from Texas Children's Hospital in Houston and have exchanged some children's artwork.

Sheffield Children's Hospital 2001

In October 2001, René, the principal of Red Cross Children's Hospital Primary School, visited England and went to the hospital school at Sheffield Children's Hospital.   She was warmly welcomed by the education staff. The two hospital schools have much in common. René was delighted to see a special wall hanging made by the learners of Red Cross Children's Hospital School for the children at Sheffield Children's Hospital, prominently displayed. Regular contact and an exchange of ideas continue between the two hospital schools.

Sheffield Children's Hospital 2002

It was with great joy that Rachel Thompson, a teacher at Sheffield Children's Hospital and her family arrived in Cape Town to spend some time with the children and hospital school staff at Red Cross Children's Hospital. Rachel and her family, Craig, Emily and Charlotte, gave up several days of their holiday to visit the hospital school. They also visited Sarah Fox Children's Convalescent Hospital where many of the hospital children go after they have been discharged. Rachel and her family made our children feel so special with all the attention and gifts. Craig helped one of the learners to design a guitar made from an oil can as well as paper model aeroplanes. Emily and Charlotte did magic tricks and painted pictures with the children. Rachel helped with school lessons.  The link between the two hospital schools has been strengthened and it is hoped that this visit will be the first of many.

Dutch students

The arrival of two education students from the Netherlands in April 2006, delighted the children.  They were fascinated by the strange accents, yet were able to understand the students.  Renee Doesburg and Anne Verbruggen from Eindhoven are the first Dutch students who have spent time in the hospital school as education students.  Both Renee and Anne adapted well to the hospital school routine and contributed much to provide the best possible tuition for the hospitalised children.  They also gave the children the opportunity to ask questions about the Netherlands and so enabled them to learn more about a foreign country.  Renee and Anne also visited Groote Schuur Hospital School, Brooklyn Chest Hospital School and Observatory Junior School.
