The hospital school has formed ties with the community.  Young people from several high schools participate in a reading and interaction programme with the hospital children on a regular basis.  Prominent people such as authors of children's books, musicians, sportspeople and celebrities visit the children in hospital school and share some of their experiences with them.  The children are encouraged to follow a positive role model set by the selected invited guests.

Visit from cricketer Gary Kirsten

Gary Kirsten visited the hospital school before going on an overseas cricket tour in June 2002. He spent time with the learners reading stories and telling them about his trip to the game reserve. The children "rewarded" him with special animal stickers. They also sang to him and presented him and his wife with a special plate which they had painted. Gary will always be welcome in the hospital school.

Visit from the Van der Stel Laerskool Grade 7

A group of learners from the Van der Stel Laerskool Grade 7 class visited the hospital school.  They had collected toys, stationery and gifts for the children in hospital.  Mr Eugene Kasner, the principal and a teacher, Mrs Yvonne Mostert, accompanied the learners.  The young people from Van der Stel Laerskool visited the patients in the wards and made the day very special as they interacted with the sick children.  The children were delighted to receive gifts and have visitors who brightened their day.

Niki Daly shares his birthday with us

Niki Daly came to visit the children in the hospital school to read from his books.  The children surprised him by singing Happy Birthday to him and presented him with a big birthday card which they had made.  A cake with a candle was brought in and Niki had to make a wish as he blew out the candle.  Exclusive Books in Cavendish Square donated a box of books to the school library as part of of Niki's visit.

Mrs Vallie arranges a fundraiser

Mrs Yumna Vallie a member of the Muslim Community of Cape Town arranged a spectacular evening of music in order to provide new computers for Red Cross Children's Hospital Primary School and Groote Schuur Hospital School.  The support that was received for the fundraiser was overwhelming and our sincere thanks go to all concerned.  Mrs Vallie's hard work and enthusiastic committment for this fundraiser made it a huge success.  In addition to the computers that Mrs Vallie donated to the two hospital schools, Mr and Mrs Frances also donated a computer to the Red Cross Children's Hospital Primary School.
