The learners in the hospital school are made aware that the environment and the caring for their environment are important. Special environment days such as Arbor Day is celebrated each year with the children in hospital and the Therapeutic Learning Centre. The cultivation of the school garden is an on-going project.
2002
This year Arbor Day fell on 6 September 2002. The learners in the Therapeutic Learning Centre wrote and presented their own play about the importance of trees. They also planted a yellowwood tree in their school garden. The learners in the hospital school planted their yellowwood tree in an open area in the new section of the hospital. Mr Dave Miller donated the tree and helped the children to plant their tree. Nazrina Teladia, Director of the Friends, joined the children and the teachers in the tree planting ceremony.
2001
The children in the hospital school celebrated Arbor Day on Friday 7 September 2001. As we were unsure about the weather, it was decided that we would have an Arbor Day programme inside the classroom. The children made their own Arbor Day crowns with leaves and flowers first and then there was a lively discussion about trees. Then each child was provided with a container, soil and a seedling and planting took place. These seedlings were taken back to the children's wards to be placed on their bedside lockers. The programme ended with the story about a boy and a tree.
