Students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology spent several weeks at the hospital school as part of their studies. Most of the students found it interesting. They helped by giving individual attention to many children. A special music lesson was given by student Clive who brought his trumpet to school much to the delight of the children. Other students also presented worthwhile lessons in Art, Lifeskills and Maths.
The Hospital Trust arranged visits from two well-known South African artists to the school. Cecil Skotnes and Paul du Toit donated their artworks to be auctioned for funds for the Red Cross Children's Hospital at a special function. The two artists visited the children in the classroom and joined in their art lessons. Paul du Toit together with the children painted a box which will be presented to Bill Gates. He promised to return to the school next year to paint and have fun with the children.
Teacher Michelle arranged with Jo-Ann Bannister to present a soap-making workshop with the children. The children were shown how to make different kinds of soaps and learnt a new skill. Thank you Jo-Ann, for your time with the children in the hospital school.
Students from the Silwood School of Cookery spent a morning with the children in school. They iced and decorated delicious cupcakes and made other interesting things to eat.
This year Homenet Real Estate in Goodwood donated stationery, teddy bears and a portable DVD player. Juanita Welgemoed, Susann Schoombee and a wonderful group of people from Homenet visited the hospital school and gave each child in the hospital a teddy bear. Their visit was greatly appreciated by everyone. Their donation of the LCD portable DVD player enables the teachers to reach individual children in isolation or those who cannot come to the classroom. The children work well in order to have the privilege of watching DVDs on the nifty portable DVD player.
Biggie Best donated material and made curtains for the school. Thank you Biggie Best for helping us make our classroom child friendly.
SABC 2 filmed the children in the wards and classroom for School TV on Friday mornings.
Our link with the staff and children at Leicester Hospital School in Leiceister England continues to grow. It is hoped that an exchange programme between the two schools can be initiated in the next year.
Father Christmas visited and brought presents for the children in the Therapeutic Learning Centre (TLC) this year. The children completed the first phase of the planned photographic exhibition to be held next year to celebrate the 50 years of Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. The children were given disposable cameras with the assignment to take photographs of the TLC and the people who work there. The children were mentored by students of the Institute of Photography in Stellenbosch. These photographs were exhibited at the TLC when Father Christmas visited. Some of these photographs will be included with the photographs taken by the children in the hospital to form the photographic exhibition: The Hospital as seen by the Children.
