Question 4 - Computer architecture - 25 marks

The number of registers that a CPU has and the size of each help determine the power an speed of a CPU. A 32-bit CPU is one in which each register is 32 bits wide. Therefore each CPU instruction can manipulate 32 bits of data.

- SIMMS are Single In-line Memory Module. Can come in 30-and 72-pin formats. SIMM sockets allow SIMM boards to be inserted or removed quickly. Enables one to upgrade memory.

- Large disk space
Large amounts of RAM - 64 meg and above
Good video card
Fast processing speed

- Data bus - is the way data and program instructions travel to the CPU. The CPU also sends results back tot he memory after execution. The data bus therefore transfers data in both directions between the CPU and memory
- Address bus - when the CPU needs data or instructions from the memory, it has to tell the memory where the data/instruction must come from. This location is called the address of the data/instruction. The address bus carries this address. It transmits in one direction - from the CPU to the memory.
- Control bus - carries control signals, the signals that tell memory if the CPU wants to read or write memory.
