Question 6 - Data communication - 26 marks

  1. A small school is setting up a new computer centre, with 11 stand-alone computers, for learners. The school could have installed a network, but decided against this idea. Give TWO reasons for this decision.

  2. A sawmill has two depots, A and B, 5 km apart. The head office is situated at depot A. Data, necessary for processing is entered by the managers of the two depots using two workstations, into a central server which is situated at the head office. A third workstation at head office handles all office administration.

    Note these facts and answer the following questions:

    1. Why is a printer at depot B not necessary?
    2. A dedicated line links depot B to the head office.
      1. What is meant by a "dedicated line"?
      2. Name TWO types of connections you would recommend for this line.

  3. Consider the following networks:

    Network A - A set of dumb terminals connected to a file server.
    Network B - A set of microcomputers each with 8 MB RAM and colour VDU but without hard disks, connected to a file server forming a client-server network.
    Network C - A set of microcomputers each with 8 MB RAM, colour VDU and small hard disks connected together to form a peer-to-peer network.

    Using the networks described, state with reasons, which network is best suited to each of the following applications:

    1. A computer system for a school where learners are developing their own programs.
    2. A computer system at a company for recording sales.
    3. An information retrieval system at a library, where users look up the catalogues of books on the computer system.
    4. A computer system in a large company using a text-based word processor.

  4. The head office of a firm decides to install a LAN (Local Area Network). Up to now they have used stand-alone PCs which have been sufficient for their needs. This has included the use of Windows '98 software. Their existing equipment will be used when setting up the LAN. All the existing PCs are standardised to meet a minimum configuration and all come from one reputable supplier. The firm has insisted on a client-server type of network.

    1. In order to set up the network several items of hardware and software will have to be purchased.
      1. What additional item(s) of hardware will be required for each PC?
      2. What is the purpose of this new hardware?
      3. What major item(s) of hardware will be required for the network as a whole?

Question 8 - Integrated question - 10 marks

A daily newspaper has a local area network (LAN) which links all the computers in their Cape Town headquarters. The headquarters consists of a newsroom, an editorial office and a printing works. The newspaper also has a wide area network (WAN) linking it to a regional office in Bellville and an overseas office in London.
  1. The local area network is linked using cable connectors. How might the wide area network be linked between:
    1. Bellville and Cape Town?
    2. London and Cape Town?
  2. Describe TWO ways in which use of the LAN benefits work in a newsroom or the publishing of a newspaper.
  3. In what format would an editor on the paper prefer to receive a report from a correspondent - as electronic mail or a facsimile transmission? Give a reason for your decision.
  4. How could a sports photographer at a soccer match in Oudtshoorn take a photograph, and very quickly send that photograph to the newspaper headquarters in Cape Town? (He does not have time to have it developed in Oudtshoorn.)
  5. Which ONE of the following would be most suited for use by a sports reporter working at the soccer match? - personal computer (PC), laptop or palmtop.
  6. Print newspapers have to compete with online newspapers. Name ONE weekly South African newspaper available online.
  7. Name ONE desktop publishing application that is used for the editing and laying out a major newspaper.
  8. The network administrator of a newspaper headquarters would probably have the qualification MSCE or CNE. Select the most suitable qualification for administering an NT network.

Question 8 - Presentation Skills Module - 20 marks

You have completed the Presentation Skills module for Computer Studies SG and have been asked to help organise a concert to be held in an open field.
    1. Which computer application would you use to plan the layout of the field with regard to lights, seating, speakers, toilet facilities, stage, etc.? Give a reason for your choice.
    2. What computer application can you use, that would give the exact length/distance of the wiring needed for the connections? Note that these lengths/distances will change as the plan develops.

    1. You have to create advertising for the concert. There are two types of graphics - vector and bitmap. Which type of graphic would you use if you wished to enlarge or make the graphic smaller without creating fuzzy lines?
    2. Give the name of a well-known computer program that will let you create graphics in bitmap format.
    3. What is the most common extension of a graphic found on the World Wide Web?
    4. To download a graphic from the World Wide Web you position your mouse pointer over the graphic and then click the left or right mouse.
    5. If you decide to organise the booking for the concert via the World Wide Web, what scripting language should you have an in-depth knowledge of?
