Question 4 - Data communication and Social implications - 45 marks

  1. Your mother opens an Edgars account in Johannesburg while visiting the town during the summer holidays. She purchased a few things with the card she received and monitors her account to make sure that she doesn’t go over her limit. Back at home in Cape Town she just carries on with the same card and received a bill at the end of the month, including the purchases of Johannesburg and Cape Town. Your mother wants to know why she didn’t receive separate billing from the two different branches.

    1. Explain to your mom what a network is. (2)
    2. After explaining networks she will be able to understand the different types of networks. Explain to your mom how a LAN can develop into a WAN. (2)
    3. She wants to know where Edgars gets so much wire to connect the Johannesburg branch with the Cape Town branch. Briefly explain to her how communication channels between branches are being established. (2)
    4. If she pays her account at the Cape Town branch the data on the mainframe will be updated. What is a mainframe and how come that all the branches will know about her payment. (2)
    5. Her friend told her that she paid her Edgars account without going to a branch. She pays her account from home using the computer. Now your mom is really excited because driving was never her best pastime.
      1. Briefly explain to your mom how her friend manages to do her payment with her computer at home. (1)
      2. She must choose between a modem dial-up connection, ADSL or ISDN dial-up. What is the difference between the three connections? (3)
      3. Motivate which connection of [ii] is the best for your mom. (2)
      4. Briefly explain what she can do to get a modem dial-up Internet connection on her home computer by explaining the following terminology: Internet browser, modem and ISP. (3)
      5. The monthly cost of the Internet is a shock to her. She wants to know if she will only be able to pay her Edgars account with this costly facility. Tell your mom about three online services that her bank may offer. (3)
      6. Driving through town you and your mom see a number of billboards advertising VoIP. Your mom wants to know if VoIP has anything to do with Internet. Realising that your sister is on her way au-pairing in Germany, explain to your mom what the acronym VoIP stands for and the benefits of VoIP for her and your sister in the near future. (3)
      7. Still, for her, the benefits of question [v] above don’t meet the expenses of the Internet. Now you have to convince her by telling her about three advantages, not yet mentioned in question [v]  that the Internet has. (3)
  2. Wireless communication is becoming more and more advanced. Off road 4 X 4 vehicle owners benefit extremely from this wireless technology. Driving through remote African countries can be very dangerous. Peter Cohen is one of the 4X4 owners that invested in an advanced cellphone with GPRS and GPS facilities before going on a tour to Kariba dam in Zimbabwe with his family.
    1. Halfway to their destination the Cohens got lost. But Peter wasn’t at all worried. After spending time on his cellphone he informed his family of their exact location and how many kilometres they still had to drive. Which facility on in his cellphone did Peter use and briefly explain which wireless communication media was used by this facility to determine their location. (2)
    2. At the border to Zimbabwe there was a bit of a snag. They wouldn’t let Peter’s 14 year old daughter through due to wrong information on her passport. Peter phoned SA Department of Foreign Affairs and ask them to email him the correct information.
      1. Which of the cellphone facilities mentioned in [2] did Peter use to receive the email and how does the calculation of the cost of this facility differ from an ordinary dial-up connection? (2)
      2. Peter’s email address is peter@mtnloaded.co.za. What is the name of his service provider? (1)
      3. Peter uses web-based email (web mail) because it offers features such as scanning for viruses and spam detection. What does web-based email (web mail) mean and name one web mail provider. (2)
    3. Later that week Peter’s 16 year old son was bitten by a snake. The local doctor wanted to know which type of snake it was in order to determine the antidote. Peter immediately went on the Internet but was frustrated with the poor bandwidth.
      1. What is bandwidth? (1)
      2. The bandwidth expected from Peter’s cellphone is approximately 90kbps. What does the unit kbps stands for? (2)
    4. While exchanging South African rand for Zim dollar, Peter was really discouraged by the poor exchange rate and wasn’t sure if the information of the bank clerk was correct. How can Peter use his cellphone to determine the correct exchange rate without phoning anybody? (1)
    5. Peter took some pictures using his cellphone. The memory however on his phone was not enough to keep all the photos for the whole journey. Which wireless communication could he use to transfer the photos to his laptop (with no internal modem) and describe which wireless media is used during the transfer. (2)
    6. Arriving at Kariba dam hotel, Simon their 23 year old son wanted to play online games when he saw the notice of a WiFi hotspot facility in the lounge. He asked if he could borrow his dad’s laptop.
      1. What does the WiFi connectivity on Peter’s laptop mean? (1)
      2. What is a hotspot? (1)
      3. Name one other way Simon could use to get Internet access with his dad's laptop, without using the WiFi facility? (1)
  3. Responsibilties
    1. Software manufacturers issue users license agreements to protect themselves from software piracy. In some countries like China however, legal protection for software does not exist.
      1. Name two reasons why South Africa should meet their responsibility and enforce the copyright law by prosecuting the offenders.  (2)
      2. You have a responsibility upon the acceptance of the end-user license agreement (EULA) when you buy software. Name two typical conditions that you are not permitted to do. (2)
    2. You have a responsibility to yourself. Internet addiction disorder (IAD) describes the condition attributed to users who are dependent on or abusing the Internet. Name one disadvantage of this disorder. (1)
