Question 5 - Social implications and careers - 23 marks

    1. A smart card is a storage medium, about the size as a credit card, that stores data on a thin microprocessor embedded in the card. When inserted into a specialised card reader the information can be updated. A normal ATM or credit card does not contain a microprocessor and therefore the information can only be stored and not updated. (2)
    2. Hotels issues smart cards instead of keys. Store prepaid amounts for a prepaid telephone calling card. Storing patient records and health care information. Prepaid amounts for electronic money. (2) [4]

    1. Strange characters appearing or moving on the screen. System frequently freezing without any reason. Data disappears without any reason. Data gets corrupted. No more space on hard drive or in memory. Computer becomes very slow, especially when booting. Some virus code will display a message letting you know that the virus has done its damage.     2.  A worm is a malicious program that copies itself repeatedly in memory or on a disk drive until no memory or disk space remains. When no memory or disk space remains, the computer stops working. (2)

  3. An IP address is a number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet. It is an all-numeric address. A domain name is the text version of an IP address. [2]

  5. A cookie is a small file that a web server stores on your computer. The next time you visit the web site, your browser retrieves the cookie from your hard disk and sends the data to the web site Cookies files typically contain data about you, such as your user name or viewing preferences.   6. Restrict access to certain material by using a rating system. If content at the web site goes beyond the rating limits set in the web browser, a user cannot access the web site. Use web filtering software that can restrict access to specific web sites. [2]
  7. Digital divide is a phrase used to describe the idea that people of the world can be divided into two distinct groups: those that have access to technology and with the ability to use it and those who do not have access to technology or are without the ability to use it. The less fortunate people are therefore not able to take advantage of the technology that makes the rest of society prosper and grow. [2]
