There are six questions in this paper.  After each question draw a line, and then leave 3 open lines - If you do not do so marks will be deducted.

Question 2 - True or False, correct it - 5 marks

In each of the following cases indicate whether the statement is True or False. Correct each false statement by rewriting the statement, changing the bold-printed portions only. No marks will be awarded for simply negating the false statement.

  4. Imagine that you were setting up a small shop selling clothes. At any time there would be a manager and two assistants on duty. Draw the table below and provide the following information in table format.
    1. List three items of ICT equipment would you need in your shop
    2. Describe the tasks your ICT equipment would perform

Question 4 - Software - 10 marks

  1. Give one advantage of an integrated package or software suite.  (1)
  2. Complete the sentences by supplying suitable word(s):

Question 5 - Data communication/Internet - 14 marks

    1. Briefly describe the physical appearance of an internal modem. In other words, what does this modem look like? (1)

    3. Give one advantage of an external modem when compared to an internal modem. (1)
  2. What is an Internet hoax? (1)
  3. Define data communication. (2)
  4. Name two businesses/organisations or types of businesses/organisations that have to be paid when accessing the Internet from home. (2)
  5. What are Google and Altavista and discuss their function? (1)
  6. Suppose someone sends you an email when your computer is switched off and disconnected. Will the email be lost? Explain. (2)
  7. Name the three basic components of a data communication system. (3)

Question 6 - Social implications of the computer - 19 marks

  1. Study the Annexure and answer the question. When you compare the prices of the two quotations, there is not much difference. What is the most expensive item, included in quotation B, that is lacking in A and that can convince John to choose quotation B? (1)
  2. Study the Annexure and answer the question. With which part of the quotations would be BSA be most interested?  For the BSA to be satisfied or happy what must be supplied to the buyer? [2]
  3. Computer games are mostly forbidden or discouraged by educators in Computer Studies classes.
    1. Give one advantage of computer games for a learner. (1)
    2. Computer games are a waste of time. What is another disadvantage of computer games? (1)
  4. Scenario:  Student travelling by taxi needs to study.  What socially acceptable technology can be used by him/her to see work such as science experiments or read notes? (1)
  5. Security on the Internet is very important, especially for the protection of clients of a bank when they are using a browser.

  8. A good password is to take a phrase known to you, replace the first letter of each word with a number meaningful to you, and then remove the blank spaces.
    1. Based on the idea above create a password based on the following phrase: computers are fun for learning  (This idea is meaningful to your computer teacher.)  (1)
    2. As an exercise create a password based on a phrase which you select.  Give the phrase and the password. (1)
