Question 4 - Dear Doctor Byte ... - 1 mark each - 5 marks

Answer each question with a short answer.

  1. Everyday I use my computer for typing out lesson plans for the following day.  For the past month, I have been deleting a huge number of old lessons that are now out of date.  I have also been saving several very large documents that people sent to me via email.  My computer has become very slow especially when I try to retrieve data from the hard drive.   What should I do about it?
  2. I recently cleaned up my hard drive by deleting many files and tidying up my Desktop.  I can't use my printer any more.  It says that a printer is not installed.  What has happened?
  3. I create wonderful presentations on my computer at home and need to take them to school to use in class but they cannot fit on a 3½" disk.   How can I take a large file from one place to another, on a 3½" disk?
  4. I took some wonderful holiday photographs and want to send copies of them to the people in Thailand with whom I spent my holiday.  I could send the photographs to them by normal postage but it is too slow and expensive.  What is a cheap and quick way to send photographs to people far away?
  5. I pressed Print by mistake and wasted a great deal of paper printing rubbish.  What can I do, if and when I press Print by mistake, and want to stop 'mistake' printing.

    Note these facts and answer the following questions:

  2. A sawmill has two depots, A and B, 5 km apart. The head office is situated at depot A. Data, necessary for processing is entered by the managers of the two depots using two workstations, into a central server which is situated at the head office. A third workstation at head office handles all office administration. At depot A there are 110 workers and at depot B 75 workers.
