  9. You have been asked to help organise a concert.
    1. You have to create advertising for the concert. There are two types of graphics - vector and bitmap. Which type of graphic would you use if you wished to enlarge or make the graphic smaller without creating fuzzy lines? (1)
    2. Give the name of a well-known computer program that will let you create graphics in bitmap format. (1)

  11. At the end of the year there will be many family dinners. As you are doing Computer Studies you have been asked to assist with such a dinner.
    You are responsible for the place mats. The place mat must include an interesting frame and a picture of a guest. Pictures of family members can be taken from old photographs. You have the required computer equipment in the home in which the dinner will be held.
    1. What computer equipment can you use to obtain the pictures? (1)
    2. What specific computer program can you use to obtain the pictures? (1)
    3. The place mats must be printed in colour. What specific type of printer could you use? Give a reason for your answer. (1)
    4. In case an unexpected guest comes, you must be able to make an instant photograph of him/her which can be turned into a place mat. Explain in two steps how you would you do this? (2)
    5. It is decided that each member of the family create an object to be kept for posterity. The object would be kept in a sealed container, to be opened in 2050. What are the advantages or disadvantages of making that object in digital (computer) format? (2)

  14. Mary Taylor rents a flat from the City Council. If she finds that her flat needs repairs she walks to the Council's local office, one of 45 around the city. There a clerk sits next to Mary at a desk containing nothing but a VDU and a keyboard. She explains her problem to the clerk who types her address on the keyboard and a fraction of a second later certain details of her flat appear on the screen. The clerk adds the details of the repairs that are necessary and this information is stored. Later that day in another office elsewhere in the city a computer printout informs the works department of the problem at Mary's flat. Within a few days the repairs should have been done.
    This computer is only one of about two hundred terminals all connected via telephone lines to a massive computer located near the city centre. All the data which the clerk needs to carry out her work is kept on disk drives on the central computer.
    1. Why do you think the data is kept on a hard disk and not on magnetic tape? (1)
    2. Name one other storage devices (other than hard disks or magnetic tape) used by computers. (1)
    3. The clerk makes use of a keyboard which is the most common input unit. Keyboards are, however, not all the same. Name four ways in which keyboards can differ. (4)
    4. The Council needs to print statements for each tenant at the end of each month. These statements are printed in duplicate, using carbon paper. What printer would you recommend to them? Motivate your answer. (1)
