Question 3 - True or False - 1 mark each - 5 marks

State whether each statement is True or False. Correct each of the false statements by rewriting the statement, changing the bold-printed portions only. No marks will be awarded for simply negating the false statement. Many learners did not correct the false statement - need exercises in doing this before matric.

Question 4 - Dear Doctor Byte ... - 1 mark each - 5 marks

For this question I read the answer to see if the kids 'knew' the answer.  This was the first time such a question was asked.  In future it will get 2 marks each as it required so much writing and thinking.

Section B - 50 marks

Question 5 - Computer architecture - 25 marks

  5. Photofirst, etc. (1) Questions 1-5 are problematic.  I listed all the possible answers then went o the Net to check.   The aim was to see if the kids look around and 'live' computers.

  11. On the keyboard are three lights. Name one of them and give its purpose. Easy to mark - looked to see if the kids knew the answers. (1)

  14. speech recognition software - used by disabled or those who wish for speed. Must be silent conditions.  When I marked I did not know that it is now being used in chat rooms as it is quicker than typing for many people.  Touch screen - used in noisy and dirty conditions such as a butcher or kitchen or Spur.  (2)
  15. Goods scanned with a bar code scanner.  Bar code read and price read from database.  Price appears on cash till screen. Database adjusted to indicate goods sold and therefore stock needs to be replaced. (4)
  16. bar code, hand held, flatbed, large, etc.  And what they were used for.  If the learners did not indicate what and where they were used, no mark.  Some thoughtful answers indicating this section of the work has a relevance in their lives, e.g. scanning on entering a shop for weapons, unbabies scanned, shop, library, security on leaving stores, etc.  (4)

Question 6 - Data communication and networks - 25 marks

  9. Look at the highest domain, e.g. za - South Africa, nz - New Zealand, au - Australia, uk - United Kingdom, etc.   (4)
