Journey and Hotel

Harvey drove me to the airport early Saturday April.

I left at about 9 for Johannesburg, then flew Ethiopian Airline Johannesburg to Addis Ababa, and then on to Khartoum.

The plane got in late at Khartoum and then we had to wait ages for the baggage.

Travelling home I experienced the efficiency of the airline.  The plane got into Addis with 5 minutes to spare before the plane left for Johannesburg.  There was an attendant from the airline with a bus, to race us to the building, help through security, organise the seat number and race us with another bus to the Johannesburg plane.

I reached the Acropole Hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning.  It is the oldest hotel in the city, run by a Greek family, with Arab touches to all food.

The European/Greek aspect of the hotel is very comforting in a foreign city where I was not able to speak the language.  They arranged all the government permits, tours, etc.  The Internet is fast and computers fine.

Note the two single beds and the huge air conditioner.  The beds only had a single sheet and a light cover because of the extreme heat.

They try to prevent dust entering the room with 'snakes' across the door from the balcony into the room.   The floor covering is tiles which can be swept or washed to collect the dust.

My room had a fridge with cool drinks - of which I normally drank 2 or 3, every evening after work.

The service from this hotel is so different from that experienced in so many hotels I know in Pretoria.  Highly recommended.
